Rudyard Kipling
was one of the most popular writers in English the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Best known for his works of fiction such as
"The Jungle Book" and "Kim", and many short stories and poems including
"The Man Who Would Be King", "Mandalay" and
"Gunga Din", his other works include "The Second Jungle
Book", "The Seven Seas", "Captains
Courageous" and "Just So Stories".
According to author Henry James, Kipling was, " ...the most complete man of genius that I have ever known." Regarded as a major "innovator in the art of the short story", his children's books are enduring classics of children's literature; in 1907 he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature. The prize citation said: "In consideration of the power of observation, originality of imagination, virility of ideas and remarkable talent for narration which characterize the creations of this world-famous author."
